Hello and welcome to my website.
My name is Melissa Lindsay-Park and I will be exploring the value of four specific professional skills, in relation to my undergraduate degree. Examples from the literature about why the skills are crucial to any industry and more explicitly, in an educational context will be examined, before a more practical review of how I have successfully embedded the skills into my personal practice will be undertaken.
Professional skills refer to the behaviours and practises required for success in any given industry. Two have been identified, as being necessary across all sectors; Communication, and Team Work. The skills of Planning and Behaviour Management are specialised skills, targeting the education industry I intend to work within, upon successful completion of my studies.
With the emergence of the knowledge economy, traditional work structures have been replaced with new modes, characterised by collaboration and fast, efficient digital communications. These changes have reiterated the requirement for 21st century citizens to embrace their role as an active member of the global community, be open to innovation and commit to lifelong learning and professional development.
As a future educator, these changes directly influence my pedagogical practise. As a secondary teacher, I will have the capability to influence the development and growth of a multitude of young people; the future citizens of society. This is a massive responsibility, and therefore requires all those within the education sector to uphold millennial values and commit to achieving learning gains from all students, as well as fostering the positive ethos valued in modern society.
